Sew-In Weave Guide: Installation, Maintenance and How Long It Lasts

6 min read

A properly installed sew-in weave lasts six to eight weeks before it should be removed or tightened, and if it is done with quality human hair, the bundles themselves can be reused for a year or longer. At Arrow Exim, our raw Indian temple hair factory in Chennai, India has produced weft bundles, closures and frontals since 2011, and the salons, stylists and hair brands we ship to in more than 30 countries use them for sew-in installs every day. This guide explains how a sew-in works, how it is installed step by step, how to care for it week to week, and how to choose hair that survives install after install.

What is a sew-in weave?

A sew-in, often just called a weave, is an installation method where your natural hair is braided into flat cornrows and wefts of hair are sewn onto those braids with a curved needle and weaving thread. Because nothing is glued or bonded to your strands, a sew-in is one of the most protective ways to wear extensions: your own hair rests braided underneath while the wefts absorb the daily brushing, heat and styling stress.

Sew-ins are usually finished in one of two ways. With a closure or frontal sew-in, a lace piece covers the top of the head so every strand of your natural hair is braided away. With a leave-out sew-in, a small section of your own hair is left loose at the top and perimeter to cover the tracks, which looks seamless but requires that section to be heat-styled to blend.

How long does a sew-in last?

Two different lifespans matter, and buyers often mix them up. The install itself should stay in for six to eight weeks at most. Beyond that point your natural hair has grown out, the braided foundation loosens, and leaving it in longer invites matting, product build-up and breakage at the roots. Most stylists recommend a tightening appointment around week four if you plan to keep the install for the full eight weeks.

The hair, on the other hand, can outlive the install many times over if it is genuine, cuticle-intact human hair. Machine-weft bundles made from raw Indian hair are routinely removed, washed and reinstalled for twelve months or more, and it is common for one set of bundles to serve four to six installs. Heavily processed or mixed-fibre hair, by contrast, often mats and sheds before the first install is even due to come out, which is why the quality of the weft matters more than any other single factor.

How a sew-in is installed, step by step

  1. Prep the natural hair: wash, deep condition and fully blow-dry so the foundation starts clean and dry.

  2. Braid the foundation: flat cornrows in a pattern (straight-back, beehive or custom) chosen to suit the final style and parting.

  3. Add a weaving net if desired: some stylists sew a net over the braids for extra tension support and to protect fine edges.

  4. Sew in the wefts: working from the nape upward, each weft is measured against the track, sewn on with weaving thread, and either cut or folded at the end of the row.

  5. Install the closure or frontal (or shape the leave-out): the lace piece is sewn or combined with a small amount of adhesive at the hairline, then the lace is trimmed.

  6. Cut, blend and style: the hair is trimmed into shape and styled, and any leave-out is blended with a flat iron.

A full sew-in typically takes two to four hours in the chair depending on the pattern, the number of bundles and whether a frontal is involved.

How to maintain a sew-in week to week

  • Wash every one to two weeks with a diluted sulfate-free shampoo, working it between the tracks with your fingertips and rinsing thoroughly so nothing sits on the braids.

  • Dry the braids completely after every wash, ideally under a hooded dryer. Damp braids left overnight are the main cause of mildew smell and an itchy scalp.

  • Sleep in a satin or silk bonnet, or on a silk pillowcase, to cut friction on the wefts and your edges.

  • Oil the scalp lightly with a thin, non-greasy oil. Heavy grease builds up on the thread and tracks and is hard to rinse out.

  • Limit daily heat on any leave-out, since that section takes the most styling stress of all your natural hair.

  • Book a tightening around week four so loosened rows do not rub and tangle.

Choosing hair that survives multiple sew-ins

For sew-ins, machine-weft bundles are the standard because the stitching is tight, dense and strong enough to be sewn through and, when double-stitched, to be cut without unravelling. The hair on the weft should be raw or minimally processed with the cuticle intact and aligned in one direction, which is what keeps bundles tangle-free through repeated washing and reinstalls. When you compare vendors, ask whether the wefts are double-stitched, whether the hair is raw or steam-processed, and whether bundles from the same order come from matched donors so the texture blends as one head of hair. Salons that offer sew-ins regularly tend to keep straight and body wave bundles in the mid lengths on hand, since those are the most requested textures for this install.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a sew-in weave last?

The install lasts six to eight weeks with a tightening around week four. The bundles themselves, if they are quality human hair, can be reused across multiple installs for a year or more with proper washing and storage between uses.

Does a sew-in damage your natural hair?

Not when it is done and maintained correctly. Damage almost always comes from braids installed too tight, installs left in past eight weeks, or a wet foundation that never fully dries. Done properly, a sew-in protects your hair and many people see length retention while wearing them.

Can you wash your hair with a sew-in?

Yes, and you should. Wash every one to two weeks with diluted sulfate-free shampoo, focus on the scalp and the space between tracks, rinse thoroughly, and dry the braids completely under a hooded dryer before styling.

How much does a sew-in cost?

Prices vary a great deal by city and stylist, but as a typical market range the installation service alone often runs somewhere around 100 to 300 US dollars, with the hair purchased separately. Quality raw hair bundles commonly retail anywhere from roughly 70 to 150 dollars or more per bundle on the open market depending on length and texture, and buying factory-direct at wholesale brings the per-bundle cost down substantially.

How do you sleep with a sew-in?

Wrap or loosely braid the hair, then cover it with a satin or silk bonnet or scarf, or sleep on a silk pillowcase. This keeps friction off the wefts and your edges and helps the style last between washes.

How many bundles do you need for a sew-in?

Most sew-ins use two to three bundles with a closure or frontal for lengths up to about 18 inches, and three to four bundles for longer or fuller looks, since longer bundles carry less hair per weft.

Can you reuse the hair after removing a sew-in?

Yes. After removal, gently detangle, wash and deep condition the wefts, let them air dry completely, and store them flat or loosely wrapped in a satin bag. Raw human hair wefts handled this way are routinely reinstalled four to six times.

What is the difference between a sew-in and a quick weave?

A sew-in attaches wefts to braids with thread and lasts six to eight weeks. A quick weave glues wefts to a protective cap over molded hair and usually lasts four to five weeks. A quick weave is faster and cheaper to install, while a sew-in is more secure, more breathable and kinder to the hair over repeated wear.
