Human Hair vs Synthetic Hair: How to Tell the Difference Before You Buy

5 min read

Human hair and synthetic hair can look almost identical on a product page, but they behave nothing alike. Human hair comes from a real donor, tolerates heat and color, and lasts a year or longer with care. Synthetic hair is an extruded plastic fibre that holds one factory-set style, melts under most flat irons, and typically wears out within weeks or a few months. At Arrow Exim, a raw Indian temple hair factory in Chennai operating since 2011 and shipping to buyers in 30+ countries, the most common story we hear from new wholesale customers is that a previous "human hair" supplier quietly sent them a synthetic blend. This guide shows you how to tell the difference before you pay.

What counts as human hair — and what is a blend?

True human hair is exactly that: hair cut or collected from human donors, then cleaned and sorted. Within that category, quality varies from processed non-remy hair up to raw, single-donor temple hair with the cuticle intact and aligned. Synthetic hair, by contrast, is manufactured from plastic polymers — you will see fibre names like kanekalon, toyokalon or "heat-friendly" polyester on braiding hair and budget wigs.

The product that catches buyers out is the blend. Some suppliers mix synthetic or animal fibre into human hair wefts to cut cost, then sell the result under vague labels such as "protein hair," "premium fibre" or simply "100% hair" (without the word human). A blend can pass a quick glance, which is why every serious buyer should test a sample before ordering in bulk.

7 quick tests to tell human hair from synthetic

  1. Burn test: snip a few strands and burn them over a sink. Human hair singes slowly, smells like burnt hair (sulphur) and crumbles to soft ash. Synthetic fibre melts, smells like burning plastic and forms a hard bead.

  2. Feel test: human hair feels soft with a very slight texture, and slightly different strand to strand. Synthetic fibre feels uniformly silky, springy or waxy — unnaturally identical across the whole weft.

  3. Water test: wet a small section. Human hair absorbs water, gets heavier and reverts toward its natural texture. Most synthetic fibre repels water and keeps its factory pattern exactly.

  4. Heat test: pass a warm (not hot) iron over one strand. Human hair smooths; standard synthetic fibre stiffens, frizzes or melts at temperatures a flat iron reaches easily.

  5. Shine check: under direct light, human hair has a soft, natural sheen. Cheap synthetic fibre gives off a glassy, plastic-like shine that photographs well but looks artificial in person.

  6. Bleach reaction: a strand of real human hair lifts lighter with bleach. Synthetic fibre does not lift — it discolours, warps or is simply unaffected.

  7. Price sanity check: real remy or raw human hair cannot be sold at synthetic prices. A "human hair" bundle priced like plastic fibre almost always is plastic fibre, at least in part.

Styling, lifespan and cost compared

Heat styling and coloring

Human hair can be flat-ironed, curled, bleached, toned and dyed much like the hair on your own head — raw Indian hair in particular takes color well because the cuticle has never been chemically stripped. Standard synthetic fibre cannot be colored at all and deforms under normal styling heat. "Heat-friendly" synthetics tolerate low temperatures but still cannot be dyed and lose their finish quickly.

Lifespan

With reasonable care, good human hair extensions and wigs last twelve months or more of regular wear, and raw single-donor hair often lasts two to three years. Synthetic wigs typically look their best for four to six weeks of daily wear, and even quality synthetics rarely stay presentable beyond a few months. For anyone wearing hair daily — or reselling it — the replacement cycle changes the real cost completely.

Typical cost

Market prices vary widely, but as a rough guide synthetic wigs commonly retail anywhere from around $20 to $100, while human hair wigs generally run from roughly $150 into the high hundreds depending on lace type, length, density and hair grade. Human hair bundles cost several times what synthetic packs do. The gap looks large until you divide price by months of usable wear — human hair usually wins on cost per wear.

Why this matters for wholesale buyers

If you run a salon, boutique or online hair brand, a single batch of blended fibre can cost you customers permanently, because the failure shows up weeks later — melting under a client's flat iron, matting after the first wash, refusing to take toner. Protect yourself the same way experienced importers do: order a sample bundle first, burn-test and wash-test it, ask the supplier for factory videos rather than stock photos, and buy from manufacturers who control sourcing themselves instead of trading houses that repackage mixed stock.

Frequently asked questions

How can you tell if a wig is human hair or synthetic?

Wet a small section and apply gentle heat to a hidden strand. Human hair absorbs water, reverts toward a natural texture and smooths under a warm iron. Synthetic fibre repels water, keeps its factory curl pattern exactly and stiffens or melts under heat. The burn test on a few shed strands is the most conclusive check.

Does the burn test really work?

Yes — it is the classic industry test. Human hair burns slowly with a sulphurous burnt-hair smell and crumbles to ash; synthetic fibre melts into a hard plastic bead and smells chemical. Test strands from several points across a bundle, because blends may mix fibre through otherwise real hair.

Can you dye or bleach synthetic hair?

No. Conventional hair dye and bleach work on keratin, not plastic, so synthetic fibre will not lift or take color — at best it stains unevenly, at worst it is ruined. If a supplier claims their "hair" can be bleached to 613 blonde, that is effectively a claim that it is real human hair, and you can verify it on a sample.

Can you use a flat iron on synthetic hair?

Standard synthetic fibre melts or frizzes at normal flat-iron temperatures. Heat-friendly synthetic lines tolerate low settings, typically well below what human hair handles comfortably. Human hair — especially unprocessed raw hair — can be silk-pressed and curled routinely when you use a heat protectant and sensible temperatures.

How long does a synthetic wig last compared to human hair?

A synthetic wig worn daily usually looks good for about four to six weeks, and occasional-wear synthetics a few months. A quality human hair wig lasts a year or more of regular wear, and raw single-donor hair often two to three years with proper care. Human hair also lets you refresh the style; synthetic hair cannot be restyled once the fibre deforms.

Is human hair worth the extra cost for resellers?

For most hair businesses, yes. Human hair commands higher margins, produces repeat customers and far fewer complaints, and can be marketed honestly as colorable and restylable. Synthetic stock competes almost purely on price against mass-market sellers. Many successful brands carry synthetic only for costume or fashion lines and build their reputation on human hair.

What is a human-synthetic blend, and how do I avoid it?

A blend is a weft or wig in which synthetic or animal fibre is mixed into human hair to lower cost. Avoid it by sampling before bulk orders, burn-testing strands from multiple sections, washing a sample to see whether it mats, and buying factory-direct from a manufacturer that controls its own sourcing rather than from resellers with unverifiable stock.

Arrow Exim is a raw Indian temple hair factory in Keelkattalai, Chennai, manufacturing 100% human hair bundles, closures, frontals, extensions and wigs since 2011 and shipping factory-direct to salons, stylists and hair brands in more than 30 countries. Every bundle is cuticle-aligned human hair from South Indian temple sources — never fibre, never blends.
