Hair Extension Length Chart: How to Choose Between 10 and 30 Inches

Oct 3
5 min read

If you are deciding between 10-inch and 30-inch hair extensions, here is the short answer: 10 to 14 inches falls between the ears and the shoulders, 16 to 20 inches reaches the shoulder blades to mid-back, and 22 to 30 inches drops to the lower back, waist and beyond — and wavy or curly textures will always look two to four inches shorter than the number on the label. At Arrow Exim, a raw Indian temple hair factory operating in Chennai since 2011 and shipping to wholesale and retail buyers in more than 30 countries, length is the single most common question customers ask before placing an order. This guide explains how extension length is actually measured, what each length looks like when worn, and how texture and bundle weight change the picture.

How hair extension length is measured

Hair extension length is measured from the top of the weft, closure or wig cap down to the very tip of the hair, with the strand pulled straight. That last part matters: a 20-inch deep wave bundle is 20 inches only when you stretch a strand flat against a tape measure. Left in its natural pattern, it hangs visibly shorter.

Where a given length falls on the body also depends on the wearer. Height, torso length and where the hair is installed all shift the result — hair sewn in at the nape hangs lower than hair that starts at the crown of a wig. The chart below assumes average height and a standard install, so treat it as a reliable guide rather than a guarantee.

Hair extension length chart: what each length looks like

  • 10 to 12 inches - chin to shoulder. Bob-length styles, pixie grow-outs and short blunt cuts. The most natural choice for everyday short looks and the easiest lengths to maintain.

  • 14 to 16 inches - shoulder to armpit. A natural, believable medium length that photographs well and blends easily with most clients' own hair. A safe default for first-time extension wearers.

  • 18 to 20 inches - shoulder blades to mid-back. The best-selling range worldwide: long enough to look glamorous, short enough to stay manageable for daily wear.

  • 22 to 24 inches - mid-back to lower back. A dramatic length popular for weddings, photo shoots and protective styles. Starts to need more conscious detangling and night care.

  • 26 to 30 inches - waist, hip and beyond. Statement lengths used for editorial work, mermaid waves and maximum-impact installs. Heavier, costlier and highest-maintenance.

Why texture makes the same length look shorter

Every textured bundle is measured stretched, so the wave or curl pattern eats part of the visible length once the hair relaxes into its natural fall. As a rule of thumb, straight hair wears true to its label, body wave looks about one to two inches shorter, deep wave about two to three inches shorter, and tight curly textures can sit three to four inches or more above their stretched measurement.

The practical fix is simple: order longer than your target look. If a client wants visible mid-back length in deep wave, a 22-inch bundle will land where an 18 to 20-inch straight bundle would. Experienced stylists routinely size up two inches for wavy hair and up to four inches for curly hair, and we give wholesale buyers the same advice when they plan their stock.

Length, weight and fullness: why long bundles look thinner

A standard bundle weighs roughly 95 to 100 grams regardless of its length. Because the same weight is spread over longer strands, a 30-inch bundle contains fewer strands than a 12-inch bundle and its weft is noticeably shorter. That is why long installs need more hair to look full, not a flaw in the bundle.

As a general guide, three bundles give a full sew-in or wig up to about 18 inches, three to four bundles cover 20 to 24 inches, and four to five bundles are sensible from 26 inches up — more if the client wants extra density or the texture is straight, which shows thinness more readily than curls do.

Which lengths should a reseller or salon stock first?

If you are buying wholesale and can only hold limited stock, depth beats breadth. The 18, 20 and 22-inch range turns over fastest in most retail markets, with 14 to 16 inches close behind for natural everyday looks and 24 to 30 inches ordered less often but at higher ticket prices. Typical market pricing rises with length — longer raw hair is scarcer at the collection stage, so a 30-inch bundle generally costs a multiple of its 12-inch equivalent anywhere in the market. Many of our buyers start with a core 16 to 22-inch stock in straight and body wave, then add longer lengths and curly textures as reorder data comes in.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure hair extension length at home?

Lay the bundle flat, hold a strand at the weft and pull it gently straight along a tape measure to the tip. Always measure stretched, even on curly hair — that is the industry standard, and it is how any honest vendor's label should read.

Does 18-inch hair reach the waist?

Usually not. On a woman of average height, 18 inches of straight hair reaches the mid-back, around the bottom of the shoulder blades. For true waist-length hair, most wearers need 24 to 26 inches in a straight texture, and longer still in a wave or curl.

Why does my curly bundle measure shorter than the length I ordered?

Check it stretched before assuming a problem. Curly hair is measured pulled straight, so a correctly labelled 20-inch deep curly bundle can hang at 16 to 17 inches in its natural pattern. If the hair still falls short when fully stretched, raise it with your vendor.

What length should I buy for a bob-style wig?

Ten to 12 inches covers most bob and lob styles, landing between the chin and the collarbone. If the wig will be cut and layered after installation, start at 12 inches so the stylist has material to shape.

Are longer bundles thinner than shorter ones?

Yes, strand for strand. Bundle weight is fixed at roughly 95 to 100 grams, so longer strands mean fewer of them and a shorter weft. Plan an extra bundle once you pass 22 inches to keep the install looking as full as a shorter one.

What is the most popular hair extension length?

Across our export markets, 18 to 22 inches is consistently the best-selling range for bundles, closures and wigs alike. It delivers an unmistakably long look while staying practical to wear, sleep on and maintain.

Can I mix lengths in one install?

Yes, and it is often the better-looking option. Buying a run of lengths — for example 18, 20 and 22 inches — creates natural layering, with the shortest bundles placed at the top of the head and the longest at the nape.
