Hair Extension Methods Compared – Tape-in, I-tip, K-tip, Clip-in, Wefts and Toppers

The right method depends on how long you want the hair to stay in, how much your natural hair can take, and who is fitting it. All the options below are available in raw Indian temple hair from our Chennai factory.

Quick comparison

  • Tape-in: thin adhesive wefts, 2.5–4 cm wide, sandwiched around a slice of your hair. Fitted in 30–60 minutes. Move-up every 6–8 weeks; re-tape 2–3 times. Best for fine to medium hair and quick salon visits.

  • I-tip: single strands held by silicone-lined beads, no heat or glue. Fitted in 2–4 hours. Move-up every 6–10 weeks; hair reusable for 6–12 months or more. Best for clients who avoid heat and adhesive, with medium to thick hair.

  • K-tip (keratin): single strands bonded with melted keratin. Fitted in 2–4 hours. Lasts 3–5 months per install. Best for the longest wear and natural movement.

  • Clip-in: wefts with clips you fit yourself, in minutes. Raw sets last one to three years or more. Best for occasional wear with no commitment.

  • Sew-in weft: wefts sewn onto braided tracks. Tighten every 6–8 weeks; raw wefts last 1–3 years. Best for volume and length.

Tape-in

Fast to fit and gentle on delicate hair because the weight is spread across wide sections. Damage risk is low when installed properly.

I-tip

The gentlest method for the hair underneath, since nothing is heated or glued. It suits clients who refuse heat and adhesive.

K-tip

Gives the longest continuous wear. Damage risk is moderate and depends on a skilled fitter and good aftercare. Removal and re-bonding need a professional.

Clip-in

Choose by weight: 70–100 g for fine hair or volume only, 100–140 g for a standard full head up to 18–20 inches, and 160–220 g for thick hair or lengths above 22 inches. A full set usually has 7–10 wefts in widths from about 1.5 to 8 inches. If you are between two weights, take the heavier one, because unused wefts can stay unclipped but a set that is too light cannot give fullness.

Wefts

Machine wefts are the thickest, strongest and cheapest per gram, and suit sew-ins and wig making. Hand-tied wefts are about a third of the thickness and lie nearly flat, but are the most expensive and most delicate. Genius wefts sit in between: thinner than machine weft, durable, and typically 20–60% dearer than machine weft. Hand-tied and genius wefts suit beaded-row installs and fine hair.

Toppers

For thinning at the crown or part. Measure the area and add about one inch each side. Common bases are 2.5 by 4 inch for a part line, 5 by 5 or 6 by 6 inch for the crown, and 7 by 8 inch for diffuse thinning. Choose 120–130% density for a natural result, and match colour to your mid-lengths and ends, not your roots.

Making any method last

  • Wash every 15–20 wears with sulfate-free shampoo in lukewarm water, detangling from the ends upward.

  • Deep condition mid-lengths and ends every two to three weeks, and air dry flat.

  • Store clip-ins and spare hair in a satin bag or box, never loose.

  • Keep heat below about 180°C (350°F) and use a heat protectant.

Buying extensions wholesale

FAQ

Which method is gentlest on my natural hair? I-tip, because nothing is heated or glued. Tape-in is also gentle on fine hair when fitted correctly.

Which lasts longest? K-tip gives the longest continuous wear at 3–5 months per install, but needs a professional to remove and re-bond.

Can I reuse the hair? Yes. Raw tape-in hair can be re-taped 2–3 times, and I-tip hair stays usable for 6–12 months or longer.

What clip-in weight do I need? 100–140 g for a standard full head at medium density up to 18–20 inches. Go heavier for thick hair or longer lengths.

Which weft should I pick? Machine weft for sew-ins and wigs, hand-tied or genius weft for beaded rows and fine hair.
